Species

Alexander's Meadow is home to many native meadow species that are indigenous to NJ that compete with invasive species to thrive. Prescribed burns help to set a level playing field to ensure that native species can out-compete invasive ones. Here is a record of some of the species I encountered in Alexander's meadow, some of which are featured in my documentary!

Wild Bergamot

- Benefits pollinators (bees!)
- Small, pink flowers
- Native to NJ

Black-Eyed Susans

- Benefits butterflies and other insects
- Self seeds after blooming
- Native to NJ

Sensetive Fern

- Can shelter small animals
- Usually found much smaller, they grow slightly taller here to compete with grasses
- Native to NJ

Fleabane

- Benefits some small insects
- "Pioneer Species" in ecosystems
- There are many different species of fleabane

Allium Species

- Attracts pollinating insects
- Native in the Northeast
- Alliums include species like wild garlic and onion

Milkweed

- Very important to pollinators and butterflies
- Native species

Timothy Grass

- Can help stabilize soil
- Beneficial to small animals and insects

Joe Pye Weed

- Seen here with a monarch butterfly
- Benefits native butterfly population
- Native to NJ

Violet Species

- Purple flowering plant
- Emerged very early in the regrowth process
- Native species
